Despite good housing, sufficient exercise and a correct diet, colic cannot be completely prevented. It remains the great terror of every horse owner. Quick action is often of vital importance. In case of severe forms of colic such as intestinal displacement and intestinal strangulations (colontorsion, herniated discs foramen epiploicum, ...), your vet will refer your horse immediately for further examination and possible surgery. 

During colic surgery, the gas and any excess intestinal content will be removed. A possible knot will be disentangled and a devitalised part of the intestine will be removed if possible. The prognosis depends mainly on the condition in which the horse is offered and the intestinal damage present, which is determined during the operation. After the operation, the horse remains hospitalised for an average of 7 days.
